I hope you can join us for a fun weekend...

Camping Along The Kern River
Memorial Day Weekend
Friday, May 23 – Monday, May 26

We’ll be camping by the Kern River, north of Lake Isabella in Sequoia National Forest.  As some of you know, the Kern is a large and pretty river (shown in the photos here) that has an impressive flow during the spring months.  (Though we won’t be river-rafting, it’s well-suited for that.)  We have a group campsite reserved right along the river in “Camp Three” Campground, north of Kernville (only about three hours from Los Angeles).  Our campsite has a limit of 30 people, so that will be the size of our group.

During the day on Saturday and Sunday, we’ll take fairly flat hikes to pretty lunch picnic spots along a couple sections of the river.  Each evening, we’ll enjoy dinner and the waning sunshine at a pretty spot either by the river or overlooking the lake.  There will be a good amount of downtime each day to relax in our campsite, shower in nearby Kernville, or perhaps rent boats on Lake Isabella.

Around Memorial Day, temperatures along the Kern River are typically about 80 during the day and in the low 50s at night, with sunshine likely.

All of the meals from dinner Friday (in case you arrive by then) through breakfast Monday will be provided, including lunches.  Everyone will be asked to help provide one meal to the group, including shopping, cooking and cleaning up.  Other than that meal, you’ll be able to relax and be served by others for the rest of the meals during the weekend.

The cost of the trip is $45 per person, including the campsite fee, all our common supplies, firewood for our nightly blazes, and all of the wine and beer for the weekend.  (Don’t worry...no Charles Shaw!)  Since space is limited and the trip will fill up, I’ll give first priority to those who are going to join us for the entire weekend, Friday night through breakfast on Monday.  (Please let me know if you plan otherwise...thanks!)

As usual, kids beyond the crying in the night stage are welcome to join us, and I expect at least one or two will be on the trip.  Pets on the other hand will need to stay at home or the Bakersfield Motel 6.  After sign-ups are completed, I’ll circulate any carpool requests, in case you’re looking for either a passenger or ride.

To sign up for this trip, please send me a check for $45 to:  432 Eleventh St., #7, Hermosa Beach, CA  90254.  Along with your check, please let me know whether you plan to arrive on Friday in time for dinner.  Either way is fine, and it won't be a hassle if you change your plans...I just want to get an initial count for planning dinner that evening.  Also, feel free to let me know if you have a preference regarding which meal you help prepare.  No guarantees, but I'm happy to meet as many requests as possible.

These trips tend to fill up fairly quickly, so if you'd like to come along, you may want to mail your check without delay.  (Note that if you flake out after you sign up, your trip cost will become a much-appreciated donation to the group’s wine fund.)

I think it’s going to be a really fun weekend, and I hope you’ll join us!  Several of us will be taking off Friday and heading up that morning...feel free to join us if you’d like.  Let me know if you have any questions about the trip.
