I hope you'll join us for an enjoyable holiday weekend...

Camping in Sequoia National Park

Labor Day Weekend
Friday, August 29th – Monday, September 1st

As many of you know, Sequoia Nat. Park is home to the giant sequoia trees.  It’s in the midst of the Sierra Nevada Mtns., which combined with the foliage provide some great natural beauty.

We have two adjacent group campsites reserved in Dorst Creek Campground, where the group sites are among the prettiest I’ve seen...tall trees, nice view and plenty of room (and distance from other campers).  The campground has running water and flush toilets, and showers are available a few miles down the road.  Dorst Creek runs nearby, though I suspect it will be little more than a trickle by Labor Day.

We’ll do one hike each day for a lunch picnic, and these are likely to be among the highlights of the trip.  One day, we’ll take a fairly easy five-mile round-trip walk to the crest of Little Baldy.  Two hiking books describe Little Baldy as the “best view of any day hike in the park” and “one of the best panoramic views in the park”!

The other day we’ll hike to the Muir Grove, a large collection of giant sequoia trees that is much less visited than the sequoia groves you can drive to.  The Muir Grove Trail is fairly flat and it begins just a couple hundred yards from our campsite!  We’ll have lunch at a vista point along the hike which has a very pretty view of the surrounding mountains.

We'll have dinner Sat. evening atop a hill with a 360-degree view, just a couple miles from our campsite.  Then on Sunday, we’ll relax and have dinner in our campsite, starting with Champagne Hors d’Oeuvres courtesy of Debbie Doupe and Lisa Barber around 5:00, followed by dinner later that evening!

All of the meals from dinner Friday (in case you arrive by then) through breakfast Monday will be provided.  Everyone will be asked to help serve one meal to the group, including shopping, cooking and cleaning up.  Other than that meal, you’ll be able to relax and be served by others for the rest of the meals during the weekend.

1.)  The cost of the trip is $45 per person, including the campsite fees, firewood, common supplies, and all of the wine and beer for the weekend.  To sign up for this trip, please send your check to me.

2.)  When you send your check in, will you please let me know if you’re planning on leaving prior to Monday morning?  Thanks!  Since the trip is likely to fill up, I’ll give first priority to those who are going to join us for the entire weekend, Friday night through breakfast on Monday.  (If you’d like, feel free to also let me know if you have a preference as to which meal you help prepare.  Won’t be able to meet everyone’s requests, but I'm happy to try.)

As usual, kids beyond the crying-in-the-night stage are welcome to join us, and I expect at least one or two will be on the trip.  (However, please make alternative plans for any pets...thanks!)  After sign-ups are completed, I’ll circulate any carpool requests, in case you’re looking for either a passenger or a ride.

This trip probably will fill up fairly quickly, so if you'd like to come along, you may want to mail your check without delay.  (Note that if you decide to bail on the trip after you sign up, as usual, your trip cost will become a much-appreciated donation to better wine for the group!)

I think this is going to be a really fun weekend, and I hope you’ll come along!  Many of us will be taking off Friday and heading up that morning...feel free to join us if you’d like.  Let me know if you have any questions about the trip.
